Overview
What is wellness and preventive care?
Wellness care is the visit you make when your animal seems healthy. We do a full exam, bring vaccines up to date and set up a plan to keep fleas, ticks and worms away. It is also a chance to ask about food, weight, behavior and anything else on your mind.
Most adult pets need a wellness visit once a year. Puppies, kittens and older pets often need more. For horses and cattle, a yearly visit is a good time to check on vaccines, parasites and body condition.

Why a yearly exam matters
Animals are good at hiding pain and illness. A dog with sore teeth may still eat. A cat with early kidney disease may only drink a little more water. Many problems show up on an exam long before an owner would notice them at home.
Finding a problem early usually means a simpler treatment, an easier recovery and a lower bill. That is the whole point of preventive care.
Call to book a wellness visit. We will tell you what vaccines and tests your animal is due for.
Vaccines
Core vaccines protect against diseases that are common, serious or can spread to people, such as rabies. Oklahoma requires dogs and cats to be vaccinated against rabies. Other vaccines depend on how your animal lives. A dog that boards, goes to the groomer or spends time in the woods may need more than a cat that stays inside.
We look at your animal’s age, health and lifestyle and recommend only what makes sense. If you are boarding with us at Ft. Gibson, call ahead and we will make sure your pet’s vaccines are current for the stay.
Parasite prevention
Fleas, ticks, heartworms and intestinal worms are common in eastern Oklahoma. Heartworm disease spreads through mosquito bites and can be fatal for dogs, so most dogs here need prevention all year. Ticks can carry diseases that make pets very sick.
We will help you choose a prevention plan that fits your pet and your budget, and test for heartworm when it is due. For livestock, we can talk about deworming and pasture management.
Questions to bring to the visit
A wellness visit is your time to ask questions. Is my pet at a healthy weight? Is this lump something to worry about? Why does my dog scratch so much? Write down anything you have noticed since the last visit and bring it with you.
If we find something that needs more care, we can talk about internal medicine or surgery on the same day, so you know your options before you leave.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
How often does my pet need a wellness exam?
Most adult dogs and cats need one wellness exam a year. Puppies and kittens need several visits in their first months for vaccines. Senior pets often do better with a checkup every six months.
Which vaccines does my dog or cat need?
Every dog and cat needs a rabies vaccine, which Oklahoma law requires. Other vaccines depend on age, health and lifestyle. We will recommend only what fits your pet.
Do you do wellness visits for horses and cattle?
Yes. A yearly visit is a good time for an exam, vaccines and a parasite plan. We can see large animals at our Stilwell location or on your place.
Can I spread out the cost of preventive care?
Yes. We work with Cherry and CareCredit, which let you pay for care over time. Ask our front desk when you call.
