Overview

Grooming with a vet down the hall

Grooming keeps your pet clean and comfortable. It is also one of the best chances to spot health problems early. A groomer handles every part of your pet, from ears to paws, and often notices lumps, skin problems, sore ears or overgrown nails first.

At LegacyVet, grooming happens inside the same building as the doctors. If anything looks wrong, we can have a vet take a look, often the same day, so you do not have to make a second trip.

Why regular grooming matters

Mats pull on the skin and can hide sores and fleas. Long nails change the way a dog walks and can lead to sore joints. Dirty ears can turn into painful ear infections. Regular grooming heads off all of these.

How often your pet needs grooming depends on the coat. Long-haired and curly-coated dogs often need a groom every four to eight weeks. Short-haired pets may only need a bath and a nail trim now and then.

Call your nearest location to book a groom. Tell us your pet’s breed and coat so we can plan the time.

Nervous pets and senior pets

Some pets find grooming stressful. Older pets may have sore joints or trouble standing for long. Let us know ahead of time, and we will take it slow and give breaks when needed.

If your pet gets very anxious, ask us about it at your next wellness visit. We can talk about ways to make grooming easier.

What we look for during a groom

While we groom, we keep an eye out for new lumps, hot spots, fleas or ticks, red or smelly ears, cuts on the paw pads and broken nails. If we find something, we tell you at pickup, or we ask a vet to look before you go.

Planning a trip? At Ft. Gibson, you can pair a groom with a boarding stay, so your pet comes home clean.

Keeping your pet comfortable between grooms

A few minutes at home each week makes every groom easier. Brush your pet a few times a week, more often for long or thick coats. Check between the toes for burrs and stickers after a walk in the field. Look inside the ears for redness or a bad smell.

Trim nails before they click on the floor, or let us do it. If your dog swims in the pond or the lake, dry the ears well afterward, since trapped water can lead to an ear infection. And if your pet scratches all the time even after a bath, call us. Itching can be a sign of fleas, allergies or a skin infection that a vet visit can sort out.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Which locations offer grooming?

Grooming is offered at both our Stilwell and Ft. Gibson locations. Call the one closest to you to book.

Does my pet need current vaccines to be groomed?

Please make sure your pet is current on rabies and other core vaccines. If you are not sure, we can check your pet’s records when you call.

How long does a groom take?

It depends on the size of your pet, the coat and how matted it is. A bath and nail trim is quicker than a full haircut. When you call, tell us your pet’s breed and coat, and we will give you an idea of when to pick up.

Do you groom cats?

Call your location and ask. Let us know your cat’s coat type and temperament so we can plan the visit.
