Overview
What is internal medicine?
Internal medicine is the part of veterinary care that deals with the body’s organs and systems: the stomach and gut, kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, skin and hormones. It is about finding the cause of an illness that does not go away on its own, and then treating it.
Some problems are short term and clear up with treatment. Others, like diabetes, kidney disease, allergies or thyroid problems, need care over months or years. We stay with you through all of it, and adjust the plan as your animal changes.
What is included
- A full history and exam
- Lab tests to look for a cause
- A treatment plan you understand
- Care for long-term conditions

Signs that something deeper is going on
Call us if your animal has a problem that keeps coming back or will not go away. These signs are worth a visit:
- Drinking or urinating more than usual
- Weight loss without a diet change
- Vomiting or diarrhea that keeps returning
- Coughing or trouble breathing
- Itching, hair loss or skin infections that keep returning
- Less energy, or less interest in food
Seeing one of these signs? Call to book a visit and tell us how long it has been going on.
How we find the cause
We start with questions. When did it start? Is it getting worse? Has anything changed at home? Your answers often point us in the right direction. Then we do a careful exam.
Next, we may recommend tests such as blood work, a urine test or a stool test. We explain what each test looks for and what it costs before we run it. Once we have results, we go over them with you in plain language.
Living with a long-term condition
A diagnosis like diabetes or kidney disease can feel overwhelming. With the right care, many animals live comfortable lives for years. We show you how to give medicine, what to feed and which changes to watch for.
Regular rechecks let us see how the treatment is working and adjust it before small problems get bigger. Between visits, you can always call and talk to a person who knows your animal.
When it turns urgent
Sometimes an ongoing illness flares up. If your animal stops eating, cannot keep water down, has trouble breathing or collapses, treat it as an emergency. See our emergency care guide for what to do after hours.
Ongoing care can add up. Our financing options can help you spread out the cost. Ask us which rechecks and tests matter most, so you can plan ahead.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
What conditions does internal medicine cover?
It covers illness of the organs and body systems, such as stomach and gut problems, kidney and liver disease, diabetes, thyroid problems, allergies, skin disease and heart and lung problems.
Why does my vet want blood work?
Blood work shows how organs like the kidneys and liver are working, and can point to infection or other problems an exam alone cannot see. We explain each test and its cost first.
Can my pet live a normal life with a long-term illness?
Many can. With the right medicine, food and regular rechecks, many pets with diabetes, kidney disease or allergies live comfortable lives for years.
Do you treat ongoing illness in horses and cattle?
Yes. Internal medicine applies to large animals too. Call our Stilwell team to talk about what you are seeing.
Ready to schedule an internal medicine visit?
Appointments are scheduled by phone, so you always talk to a person.
