Overview

Surgery, explained before it starts

Hearing that your animal needs surgery is stressful. We start by explaining why we recommend it, what the procedure involves, the risks, the costs and what recovery will look like. You make the decision with all of that in front of you.

Common surgeries include spays and neuters, removing lumps and masses, repairing wounds and removing objects a pet has swallowed. For large animals, we can talk about what can be done on the farm and what needs a clinic visit.

What is included

Need help with the cost? See our payment plans.

Before surgery

Before most surgeries, we do an exam and may recommend blood work. These checks help us choose the safest anesthesia and spot anything that could change the plan.

We will tell you when to stop food and water the night before, and what time to drop off your pet. Please tell us about every medicine and supplement your pet takes, even ones that seem small.

Have questions about an upcoming surgery? Call us. We would rather answer them before the day comes.

On the day

When you drop off your pet, we go over the plan again and make sure we can reach you by phone. During surgery, your pet is under anesthesia and watched closely the whole time. We use pain medicine so your pet is as comfortable as possible when they wake up.

When surgery is done, we call you to say how it went and when your pet can go home.

Recovery at home

Most of the healing happens at home. We send you home with written instructions on medicine, food, activity and wound care. Many pets need to wear a cone so they cannot lick or chew the stitches.

Keep your pet calm and quiet for as long as we advise, even if they seem to feel fine. Call us if you see swelling, redness, discharge or bleeding at the incision, or if your pet stops eating or seems to be in pain.

Spay and neuter

Spaying or neutering your pet prevents unplanned litters and can lower the risk of some health problems. The best age depends on the species, breed and size of your pet. We will help you decide when to schedule it as part of your pet’s wellness care.

If cost is a concern, ask about our payment plans with Cherry and CareCredit. We will give you an estimate before surgery, so you know what to expect.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is anesthesia safe for my pet?

Anesthesia always carries some risk, but checks before surgery lower it. We examine your pet first, may recommend blood work, and watch your pet closely the whole time they are asleep.

When can my pet go home after surgery?

Many pets go home the same day once they are awake and comfortable. We will call you when surgery is done to tell you how it went and when to pick them up.

How long is recovery after a spay or neuter?

Most pets need about 10 to 14 days of rest and limited activity while the incision heals. We will give you written instructions and tell you when to come back for a check.

Do you do surgery on large animals?

Yes. Some surgeries can be done on the farm and some need a clinic visit. Call our Stilwell team to talk about your animal.
